“Is
it possible for me to watch all the videos on YouTube within my lifetime?”
It all started when a 24-year-old jobless man asked this question in Chat GPT out of mere curiosity. The one-word answer to this question is that it is impossible, which I expected it to be. Let's bring in some math that makes this a little interesting.
- Over 500 hours of YouTube videos are uploaded every minute.
- That’s roughly 30,000 hours of videos in an hour (or) 720,000 hours in a day.
- Let’s see that I live up to 100 years and I start watching from day one to the end without sleep or food for 24/7 of my lifetime, that is roughly 876,000 hours of watch time. And there are 720,000 hours of video uploaded every single day.
- It is simply impossible to watch all the videos, even if I am an immortal being with a goal to see the end of the line of YouTube videos. (From Chat GPT)
The
Universe and the Internet
The
globally accepted fact of our Universe, among scientists, is that it is ever
expanding. And it is expanding with much acceleration, so that it becomes
impossible to find the point where we can see the end of the universe. From the
perspective of the present universe as we speak, we are constantly in the past,
trying to catch up to it. Even if a person travels at the speed of light in
search of the end of the universe, they can never reach that point, no matter
how consistent they are in their effort.
We
can take this particular aspect of Our Universe, which is confirmed in its
theory, and compare it with the Internet that we created. The common factor in
both of them is that they are constantly expanding, and it is expanding with
greater acceleration. I know I am in no position to point out the difference
between them. But to my feeble mind of curiosity and what it finds fascinating
is that - The major difference when we see this comparison is that the
Universe has space and time in it. The very existence of our being is the proof
of it. The Internet does not have the concept of space and time. I am not referring
to the server room that contains the data. I am pointing out the fact that it
doesn’t have the sense of existence to prove it has space and time. So, in this
aspect of comparison, what we have created and hold in our hands, i.e., the
internet, is a theoretical model of the Universe that we know of, with only
space and time that are lacking for it to be a practical model. This can be
concluded by saying,
- Our Universe is expanding with greater speed, with space and time in it.
The Internet is also expanding at a greater speed, without the space and time in it.
The Paradox of Creators vs Created.
Humans have always been fascinated by the grandeur of our Universe. As a collective being that existed in a sociable manner, we saw the creators of this universe with absolute admiration. During the Stone Age, humans made whatever they feared as their God. They were fascinated by how the Sun rises in the day and disappears, for the Moon to take over at night, so they made the Sun and Moon their gods. Throughout the ages, Humans considered the things they couldn’t find the answer to and were fascinated by as their God or the sign of the Creator. As we approached a stage in evolution where we could find out the answers to the questions that were once unanswerable, we started changing how we see these Creators. The Sun, which was once admired as God, is later found out to be just a star in the vast space of galaxies. Either spiritually or scientifically, we constantly seek the answers to the unanswerable questions.
These
Creators have been given different names throughout history and different
cultures. God, Allah, and Brahma are a few names that top the chart. And we
created stories around these creators that appeal to the different cultural
relevance. Along with all these
admirations to the creators of this universe, we humans have learnt to evolve
and survive, and managed to reach as far as here. With the help of a collective
mindset, humans have created so many things that were essential for their
existence. The internet is also one such creation, which was born from the
collaboration of humans.
As we have seen above, the internet, which we
created, strangely has similarities to the Universe that we are always so
fascinated by. In the process of evolution, we created so many things, among
which the internet is also an aspect. We were so busy admiring the creators of
this universe that we ignored that we humans have also created a model of the
universe. Let’s say in the future we were able to create space and time for the
internet, which gives it a sense of being, then what we have created is the Universe.
A space where it is constantly expanding with a sense of its own existence.
This
is where it will get interesting.
What
if the Universe that we know of has been created like this, without the
knowledge of its creators? Like how we have created the internet, there is a
chance that some form of entity was pricking on something and accidentally
created this universe. If so, then that being can’t be all knowing and
omnipotent as we see our gods. Like us, they might have been in their run for
survival and evolution, and in that process, they have created something that
we see now as Our Universe.
Let’s
take it a bit further and find what this could lead to. If the internet could
create space and time like Our Universe, then to those beings on the internet,
we will be the ones they might consider as Gods. We admired our creators so
much that we became those very creators. Are we on the edge of being the Gods
then?
One
step closer.
Metaverse, A.I., and Virtual Reality take all these a step closer. I do not know how to put it into technical terms, but when these elements come under the vast umbrella of the internet, it only makes it more efficient to say that we are indeed in the process of something greater. And the beauty of it all lies in that we are never aware of it. It is not that only those who can code and create these are the ones who are creators; remember what flies in the vast space of the internet. It is digital content, and this content is being produced by every human species, every second. The virtual reality provides the space that is required for all this data to interact in real time. We know that the universe is made up of different particles, and scientists call them protons and electrons. What if these particles (atoms) are mirrored by our data, which gives a structure to the virtual reality? Or vice versa. Which only makes it more metaphorical to say: we are on the brink of creating a universe on our own.
Mantle of the Creators
I am not a science grad. I have little to no interest in determining the laws of the Universe and even doing a simple mathematical calculation. Nor am I a person of faith in any religion. There are only great chances for all of these that I wrote to be completely wrong. Lack of space and time, and matter will not be the only thing that is different from how the Universe works to how the internet works. Obviously, there will be other factors that play a greater role. Coming to the conclusion that the internet and our Universe are similar just because they are constantly expanding can be stupid in the realm of science.
What I see in these is not science or a prophetic revelation or any fact, but the poetic metaphor of how we might be in a circle of the one being created and the one who is creating. I realized the vastness of the internet and how it is similar to our universe (similar in only one aspect, and that is its expansion). When we realize how the Gods have taken various forms throughout history and in different cultures, it heavily reflects on our views about the creators. And through evolution, we have reached a stage where we could be those very creators. Who knows whether the Gods that we are so fascinated by could really be a better version of ourselves? And the journey of humanity through evolution and survival could reach an end when a new universe is born out of us, and this time we might be the one who ignites that big bang.
If
there is a slight chance of all this being a possibility, then the question we
should ask ourselves is whether we are capable of being worshiped as the Gods,
the creators? Are the gods that we worship, are as noble as we believe, or are they just as flawed as we are?
